Peter Rubie is a Lighting Designer based in Sydney, Australia. He graduated from the WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2007 and has a passion for delivering dynamic lighting designs for a wide variety of performance styles. He strongly believes that lighting can make or break a performance when viewed by an audience and strives to enhance the performers’ and audiences’ experiences for all performance styles be it concerts, events, dance, opera or theatre.
Peter’s designs are regularly seen on concert stages all over Australia. Peter has designed the lighting for many international artists including; Lea Salonga, Ben Folds, The Proclaimers, Paloma Faith, Idina Menzel and Australian artists such as; Eskimo Joe, Kate Miller-Heidke, Megan Washington, Meow Meow, Trevor Ashley and David Campbell. Peter’s classical work includes designs for Pinchgut Opera, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and many of the state orchestras. In the musical sector Peter’s musical credits include the NSW premiere of NED: A New Australian Musical for Plush Duck Productions, Thrones! A Musical Parody for Sydney Opera House and both ONCE and A Chorus Line, for Darlinghurst Theatre Company. In 2019 Peter was the Festival Lighting Designer for the Sydney International Cabaret Festival. Also in Cabaret recently Peter was the Lighting Designer for Kabarett Haus for the 2020 Perth Festival and Lighting Director for the series The Reservoir Room which was filmed live in Sydney. Peters experience in lighting for camera extended to a close collaboration with Tina Arena & the MSO followed by a national tour of Enchanté: The Songs Of Tina Arena. In 2021 Peter designed the lighting for several contemporary music festivals including Sunset Piazza and the Sydney South Eveleigh Solstice.
Peter is often found working on a variety of contemporary music and theatrical productions that deliver a unique experience for the target audience.
